Certificate Program in Sport Analytics

Sport analytics is an important component to running a successful sport team, organization, or facility. Sport organizations increasingly rely on sport analytics to give them a competitive advantage in such matters as player procurement and player evaluation, player performance, maximizing revenue, and stadium operations. This is only a partial list of the possible uses and advantages offered by the effective use of sport analytics.

Sport analytics skills are necessary to compete for newly created jobs in the sport industry. Especially, the sport industry, like many others, is on the brink of a data revolution. To equip our students with the skills and expertise needed to thrive in this data-driven era, we must offer more specialized programs that foster analytical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation. By doing so, we will be creating graduates who are exceptionally well-prepared for the jobs of the future. That is, a certificate program in Sport Analytics will help our WNEU Sport Management Majors be prepared for and to better compete for these jobs in the sport industry. Also, this certificate program will contribute to the academic excellence and industry relevance of our institution’s future goals.

Career Opportunities

In the sport employment market, there is a demand for professionals who know how to analyze data, develop insights from data and information, and employ findings in solving business problems. For example, in the 2023 season the Boston Red Sox have 31 people employed in analytics jobs with titles including Director, Baseball Analytics, Baseball Analytics/Development Research, Baseball Analytics/Player Evaluation, and Analyst/Baseball Analytics.  The WNE Sport Analytics certificate is geared toward equipping students with a powerful blend of analytical skills and business knowledge that will help them make data-driven decisions, allowing them to deliver better business results by gaining the ability to transform data into a powerful asset.

In the non-sports job market, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), demand for management analysts is projected to grow 14 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. About 99,400 openings for management analysts are projected each year, on average, over the decade. A Certificate in Sport Analytics will be beneficial for Sport Management majors when they compete for jobs in both the sport and non-sport job markets.
